THE Ativa is finally here to quench all the curiosity and hype surrounding it and at attractive prices too, thanks to the sales tax exemption currently in place till end June. As expected, the pre-launch interest has built up nicely in the form of 5000 bookings before it was officially unveiled on Wednesday evening.
Ativa is a lot better sounding than D55L and if you have guessed that it has something to do with activity, you are just about there. Perodua President and CEO Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad said the name, Ativa, is a Portuguese word for ‘active’ and believes a test drive in Perodua’s latest model should convince one that the Ativa is the ‘perfect companion for the urban, active lifestyles that most of us live today’.
Its attraction is further boosted by the appealing price range of RM61,500 to RM72,000, on the road without insurance in the peninsula, for the three model variants – base model X, mid model H and top model AV. Dato’ Zainal said the competitive prices were made possible by its 95% localisation rate; ‘the highest initial local content rate for any Perodua model. Even the engine and transmission are locally manufactured’.
Referring to the ‘smart partnership’ between Perodua and its technical and technology partner Daihatsu, he added that the Ativa was developed on a global platform as both companies pooled resources to offer ‘the most competitive model we could produce’. Apart from raising Perodua’s collaboration with Daihatsu to a new level, it also allows Perodua and its suppliers to ‘commonise’ components and processes for maximum cost efficiency.
Perodua’s involvement started from the drawing board, Dato’ Zainal said, with ’54 of our designers and engineers working with Daihatsu on this model since 2018’. Thus, development of the Ativa was done without sacrificing ‘our unique Malaysian design, features and tastes’.
The Ativa comes with a few firsts - Perodua’s first turbocharged vehicle; its first to use a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) and its first to satisfy Autonomous Driving Level 2 standards, thereby becoming the most affordable vehicle in Malaysia to do so. The result is a combined fuel rating of 18.9km/l (with Eco Idle) to make it Perodua’s fifth Energy-Efficient Vehicle (EEV).
Debuting on the Ativa is the Advanced Safety Assist (ASA) 3.0, which is standard across the range for the first time. ASA 3.0 works at higher speeds (up to 120km/h for vehicles, up to 60km/h for pedestrians) versus the current ASA 2.0, and could now detect two-wheeled vehicles as well as function at night.
Also standard on all the variants are six airbags, automatic LED (light emitting diode) headlamps with Auto High Beam, plus Lane Departure Warning and Prevention. H and AV variants get Adaptive Driving Beam, a seven-inch TFT multi-info display and a nine-inch touch-screen infotainment system with voice recognition, while the top AV stamps its exclusive status with Lane Keep Control, Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Adaptive Cruise Control.
The 1KR-VET three-cylinder engine has double overhead camshafts and VVT-i (intelligent variable valve timing). The 1.0-litre (998cc) turbocharged engine is undersquare in configuration with 71mm bore and 84mm stroke. Power output is 72kW (98PS) at 6000rpm and 140Nm that peaks at 2400rpm and holds till 4000rpm. Compare that to the normally aspirated 1.0-litre (1KR-VE) engine in the Bezza and Axia; 50kW (68PS) at 6000rpm and 91Nm at 4400rpm.
Although the Ativa is heavier, varying from 1020kg (kerb weight) for the X variant to 1035kg (against 865-880kg for the Bezza 1.0G), it should provide good standing and moving acceleration comparable to that of 1.3-litre, and even 1.5-litre, cars. And with a 200mm ground clearance, the higher ride height should provide a better all-round view from the driver’s seat and is good for taking to bumpy stretches without the underside hitting the tarmac. – LPS
